Highlight Reel vs. Full-Length Video: Which is Right for You?

As a wedding videographer, there are two video lengths clients have to make decisions on.

Do you want a highlight reel or a full-length video? I believe a highlight reel is the same as a short film and a full-length video can also be a documentary edit. Let’s first breakdown the difference:

-Highlight Reel or Short Film is an overall story of the wedding day that is condensed into a 3–10 minute time frame.

-Full Length or Documentary Edit is an video including full moments of the wedding day such as full speeches or full ceremony. The length of this video can go range from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Now let’s breakdown, which one you feel is the best for you.

Some clients have no desire to watch a full-length video of all the moments. I have talked to a few perspective clients, and they believe they will only watch a full-length video, when it is first delivered to them. After that, they will not watch the full video, but more skip to favorite moments. I believe a documentary style video or full-length video is for you if you want to see everything, you don’t want anything cut short, you don’t want anything left out, you want to see everything. You don’t care about highlights, or effects, or quick cuts. You want to relieve your day exactly how it happened, with the exact music that was played. You don’t want to leave it up to your wedding videographer to determine what goes into your short film, although you should have some say in what goes in it. I believe if that is you, the full-length video is your best option.

On the other hand, you as a couple may not want to relieve every moment. You may want something shorter that you can share with your family and friends on social media. You simply want an impactful video that gives the key moments of the day, while invoking the same emotions as if you were there. You know you will remember the day once you see the short film. A short film or highlight reel can be impactful although it is short. You can still hear your vows, or the important pieces of your speeches, while seeing your first dance. A short film also allows your wedding videographer the room to be creative. A full length can limit creativity because the focus of the full-length video is replaying the wedding day. The short film allows us to create a story centered around you.
